Organic Garden and Energy Lab

Victorian Walled Garden

The 1 acre Victorian Walled Garden is run on organic principles. It produces fruit and vegetables for the Pestalozzi dining hall. Pestalozzi students regularly work in the garden along with other community groups and volunteers. We At work in gardenuse it as a teaching resource for visiting schools and community groups such as MENCAP, Sussex Autistic Community Trust and St Mary’s College.

The garden features a compost display area, access paths for wheelchair users and raised beds for those who find it difficult to bend down. Other features include a herb wheel, Water Efficient Garden, forest garden, rainwater harvesting and sensory beds. We aim to increase awareness of local biodiversity, and to encourage changes in lifestyles by, for example, growing your own produce organically, buying locally, recycling and managing waste responsibly.

The Energy Lab

The Energy Lab is used as a classroom to teach about renewable energy and energy efficiency. Through our work, we aim to change attitudes and behaviour that are not sustainable. By looking at more appropriate or renewable technologies and lifestyles, Energy Labwe can reduce pollution, enhance the environment, improve the quality of life and help to reduce global warming, climate change and poverty. The Energy Lab was built using sustainable building methods, including natural wood treatments and paints, sheep’s wool and recycled cork insulation, and using timber from sustainably managed forests and local sources. The building is not grid connected but is powered solely by a wind turbine and photovoltaic panels. The Energy Lab can be hired as a teaching space and Pestalozzi can provide the necessary training on request.
