Intern blog: My first week (back) at Pestalozzi

12 June 2013

Donna Ruth Mwangase was a Pestalozzi student from 2009 to 2011. Since graduation, Donna has been studying at Jacobs University Bremen in Germany. She is back at Pestalozzi this summer undertaking a marketing internship – so look out for more blog posts from her in the future!

In April 2013, I knew for sure that I’d be returning to Pestalozzi as an intern. I was very excited about going back to the place that had changed my whole life. Pestalozzi holds so many important memories and I knew that going back would give me bittersweet feelings.

Only after minutes of driving up "the hill”, I noticed how a number of things had changed. The road had been sealed, new houses had been built on the estate and I was no longer going up the hill as a student. It was very weird to be back at Pestalozzi and not have to go to college every morning to study the IB.

I enjoyed meeting and chatting with the current students over the first few days. Most of them were eager to learn about my life after Pestalozzi and I was happy to share my experiences. It was also wonderful to see some familiar staff and volunteer faces and it wasn’t long before the two years since I left Pestalozzi faded away and I felt like I had never been away at all.

I have been asked so many times, "Why did you decide to come back to Pestalozzi?” Well, I am studying Global Economics and Management at Jacobs University Bremen and one of my most interesting courses there has been marketing. I decided to do an internship in the marketing world because I believed that it would be as interesting as my course had been. When it was time for me to decide where I wanted to intern and what I would love to market, Pestalozzi came to mind. I thought it would be a good way to give back to Pestalozzi for changing my life. I hope to help the marketing department get the word out there about Pestalozzi and let the world know about the impact that Pestalozzi has on developing countries.

I dived straight into work in my first week and I enjoyed the introduction to working in the marketing department. One of the first tasks I carried out was learning how to work with the database Donorflex, and I was amazed at the work I could do with it. Being a Marketing Intern has been very exciting so far and the members of staff at Pestalozzi have been very welcoming and hospitable. I love the fact that I get to go out into the field and interact with other people and not just have to sit behind a desk for my whole time here. I am learning a lot from the experience already and I am looking forward to learning a lot more in the coming 11 weeks.
