Local young people gain life skills at Pestalozzi

14 August 2013

Dozens of young people from Hastings and Rother got a once in a lifetime experience at Pestalozzi last weekend, as part of the YMCA’s delivery of the National Citizenship Service programme.

NCS participants at PestalozziHastings and Rother YMCA are delighted to be delivering the government’s National Citizen Service (NCS) programme for local 16 and 17 year olds this summer and autumn. The programme aims to help young people take an active and positive role within our communities and develop new skills they can take with them into future learning and career paths.

Several dozen of local young people recently completed the first two phases of the programme, undertaking a challenging five-day course to promote team building, confidence, motivation and healthy lifestyle.

This phase promotes independent living and continues to build motivation and self-confidence by helping participants develop new skills and gain an understanding of what is happening in the local community. Participants camped on the charity’s country grounds and got to grips with a wide range of traditional camping related skills and activities: making fire without matches, traditional ‘green’ wood turning and working, building night shelters, a spectacular crash-scene first aid course, campfire cooking and orienteering. The activities were run by Andy Sullivan from Team Cohesion.

Throughout the week, guest speakers and dignitaries from local businesses, charities, community groups and local authorities visited to talk to participants about what’s happening in the local area and future plans for the community.

Pestalozzi’s factilities manager Alex Whittington said, "We are proud to be working with YMCA to host phase two of the NCS programme on our estate, and we wish all participants the best of luck.”
