Pestalozzi student Aldrin Shumba received a Hastings Youth Award, while Pestalozzi also gathered an award for our work with young people at the Hastings Got Culture ceremony on Sunday 7 October.
Aldrin, who came to Pestalozzi from Zimbabwe in 2011, was nominated for his work raising awareness of HIV/AIDS among students in the local area. Aldrin initiated a youth-run group called New Generation to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS-related issues faced by people around the world. The group includes students from India, Uganda, Tibet, Zambia and Nepal, many of whom have taught HIV/AIDS awareness in their home countries. New Generation has also raised funds and hosted guest speakers from charities including the Terence Higgins Trust.
On accepting the award, Aldrin said, "This demonstrates the massive sphere of influence our club has grown during the past twelve months. It means a lot to me as it reflects a change in society and an appreciation of HIV/AIDS victims.”

Pestalozzi also received an award for our work with young people in the Hastings area. While the charity is best known for our scholarship programme for students from disadvantaged backgrounds across the globe, Student Programme Assistant Sarah Kadri emphasised, "Pestalozzi also works with and inspires children and young people in the local area. We engage with local schools and we help hard to reach young people through partnerships with groups like the Eggtooth Project. It’s great to be recognised for our outreach work in the community.”
The Hastings Youth Awards are run annually in conjunction with Hastings Got Culture, a community festival celebrating local cultural diversity. A number of other Pestalozzi students contributed to the event, performing Tibetan and Spanish songs and Zimbabwean and Nepali dances.
