Jyoti Pandey

Name: Jyoti Pandey
Country: Nepal
Pestalozzi Scholar: 2002-2004

I am Jyoti Pandey, and am a Social Protection Specialist at the World Bank Nepal country office, where I work on improving government policies and programmes for the poor and vulnerable. I hold a Master’s in public policy from Hertie School of Governance, Germany.

My role is to support implementation of Bank-funded projects, conduct policy analysis and interact with government and development partners.

Currently I am working on a project that aims to strengthen basic systems in Nepal. This includes establishing electronic databases and payment systems to improve the delivery of social assistance to those in need; discussing how social protection programs can be made more responsive to disasters; and supporting household survey work to establish more evidence on risks and vulnerabilities faced by households in Nepal.

I also serve on the board of the Samaanta Foundation. Samaanta seeks to address inequality and lack of empowerment by providing comprehensive fellowships to enable meritorious but disadvantaged students to access quality higher education.

Samaanta was founded in 2012 by a group of friends seeking to address the lack of access to quality higher education in Nepal, and re-pay the opportunities we received so generously during our education. I studied entirely on scholarships all the way to my Master’s. My Pestalozzi scholarship was a crucial part of it. My two years at Pestalozzi were the foundation of an incredible international educational and social experience.

We are now in our sixth year of operation at Samaanta. So far, we have supported 39 students from five districts across the country. Fellows are currently studying a range of subjects in science, social science and humanities in Nepal and abroad.

They are all engaged young people contributing their time and energy towards various fundraising initiatives following the earthquake and floods in Nepal, and supporting after school programs in public schools.
