Name: Jyoti Pandey
Pestalozzi Scholar: 2002-2004
I am Jyoti Pandey, and am a Social Protection Specialist at the World Bank Nepal country office. I hold a Master’s in public policy from Hertie School of Governance, Germany.
My role is to support the implementation of Bank-funded projects and to conduct policy analysis to support the Government in improving the lives of the poor and vulnerable.Currently, I am working on projects that aims to strengthen delivery systems for social assistance and employment services in Nepal. The goal is to establish systems that are able to identify the people who government assistance, provide the right type of benefit or services on time, and be able to support during times of disasters.
I also serve on the board of the Samaanta Foundation. Samaanta seeks to address inequality and lack of empowerment by providing comprehensive fellowships to enable meritorious but disadvantaged students to access quality higher education. The fellowship supports two years of high school for all fellows and and undergraduate degrees for selected few.
Samaanta was founded in 2012 by a group of friends seeking to address the lack of access to quality higher education in Nepal, and pay forward the opportunities we received so generously during our education. I studied entirely on scholarships all the way to my Master’s. My Pestalozzi scholarship was a crucial part of it. My two years at Pestalozzi were the foundation of an incredible international educational and social experience.
We are now in our eighth year of operation at Samaanta. So far, we have supported 53 students from five districts across the country. The first two cohorts have completed their undergraduate degrees and we have successfully completed a full cycle of our operation!
Samaanta also supports fellows to access other opportunities.Over the last five years, four Samaanta fellows have received scholarships to attend UWCs around the world. The first two are currently pursuing undergraduate degrees in the USA following their IB Diplomas.
